What is Interior Design, Anyway?
“So… can you choose my pillows for me?”
I get this question more often than you'd think. And the simple answer is: yes, I can - but interior design is so much more than that. If I had to sum it up in one sentence, I’d say:
Interior design is the thoughtful balance of function and beauty; where space meets intention and every detail serves a purpose.
Interior design works hand in hand with both architecture and interior decorating. Each discipline brings its own strengths, but they complement each other in powerful ways, especially when it comes to shaping how a space makes you feel. It’s that sense of calm when you walk into a well-lit room. The quiet joy of a perfectly proportioned OR intentionally asymmetrical kitchen. The confidence of an office that reflects your values. Those aren’t accidents - they’re designed.
Interior design brings intention to every layer; from the overall layout and lighting, to the materials, mood, and rhythm of a space.
It is the smallest details that make the biggest impact, often felt before they’re even noticed.
It’s also deeply personal. Every client, every space, every story is different. That’s what makes the work so fulfilling.
You become a translator—taking someone’s dreams, habits, and emotions and shaping them into a space that feels unmistakably theirs. Not just a place to live, but a place to belong.
But design isn’t just creative vision. It’s also technical, structured, and collaborative. From initial discovery and concept development to detailed drawings and construction coordination, interior design is a layered process. Each phase builds on the last - ensuring we stay aligned with the client’s needs, the space’s functionality, and the overall vision.
It’s late nights drafting drawings, producing presentations, detailing joinery, and coordinating construction documentation. It’s juggling client meetings, site visits, supplier sourcing, contractor questions, budget tracking, and more - all within the same week.
One moment I’m detailing cabinetry on my laptop; the next, I’m on site, fielding calls from contractors and sketching on unfinished walls.
Ironically, when I started studying interior design, I told myself:
"I don’t want a job where I sit at a desk all day.”
Well… surprise! A huge part of the job is desk work. But the beauty of it is the balance. It’s demanding, dynamic, and deeply human.
Why Does It Matter?
Because design impacts how we live, work, and feel - every single day.
Whether you’re renovating a home or opening a restaurant, working with a designer brings both structure and creativity to the process, so nothing gets overlooked.
If it matters to you, it deserves to be designed with care. With someone who can step into your shoes, understand your goals, and guide you toward a space that feels both intentional and effortless.
